As part of the Great Backyard Bird Count 2025, come be dazzled by the diversity of species along the Mad River Slough as the tide turns from low to high on Saturday & Sunday, February 15 & 16, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Ma-le’l Dunes Unit (North) of Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

There will be shorebirds, waterfowl, waterbirds and possibly some seabirds. Fall in love with the dunes, forest and thickets that host several species of songbirds as well as birds of prey. We’ll have binoculars for you to check out and handy identification checklists to track your sightings. There will be activities for all ages. Find out why birds love mud. How do they use it? Explore what lives in the mud, hands-on and close up!

It’s a great opportunity to connect with nature, observe amazing birds, and join in on citizen science efforts! This series of events was made possible through the collaborative efforts and partnerships from: The Bureau of Land Management, Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and Friends of the Dunes.
