A college student, privately meets with her male professor to discuss her failing grades in his class. The professor is callous with her, but when she explains that she feels incompetent, he expresses empathy. He decides to give her an “A” if she agrees to meet with him regularly to discuss the material, one-on-one. Throughout the play we see the student become uncomfortable and take matters into her own hands. Oleanna is David Mamet's study of power and gender in academia.
Many questions remain unanswered and the audience is left to decide on their own which side of this moral dilemma they are on.
