Fortuna, known as the Friendly City, will host a decidedly unfriendly experience. At Sunrise Cemetery, which overlooks this historic coastal logging town, accursed souls of all kinds will rise from the dead in the annual Grave Matters & Untimely Departures.
Acclaimed regional actors in period clothing will bring dozens of real dead people back to life, hovering around their tombstones and recounting the unfortunate, often scandalous tales that put them underneath. In honor of the production’s tenth anniversary, this year’s event includes five new stories as well as four “greatest hits” characters from previous productions.
Directed by Dr. Alexandra Service (curator of the Fortuna Depot Museum) and costumed in vintage fashions by Kate Leona Newby, the cast of "Grave Matters" includes some of the area’s finest actors, several of them returning for another engagement at Sunrise Cemetery.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at Green’s Pharmacy (1058 Main Street, Fortuna), at Grocery Outlet (1085 S Fortuna Blvd, Fortuna) or on the day of the performance in the Newburg Park parking lot.
Tours start every 10 minutes and run approximately 50 minutes and will take place rain or shine. Comfortable shoes are encouraged.
Shuttles will run from Newburg Park (Newburg Road in Fortuna) to the Cemetery.
No vehicles are allowed in the cemetery during the performance.
