Humboldt County may be hundreds of miles from Hollywood but its picturesque beauty has dazzled its way onto the big screen more than a few times.
The Did dinosaurs once roam Humboldt County? Steven Speilberg must think so since he filmed scenes from The Lost World in primordial Fern Canyon. What about Darth Vader? George Lucas filmed parts of Return of the Jedi in Redwood National & State Parks.
Over the years, Humboldt County's unique parks and towns have drawn attention from many movie makers. The press has taken note of the starring role of Humboldt County as well. In 2009, in a run-up to the Oscar presentations, the San Francisco Chronicle Travel Section presented five nominations for Best Inspiration for Movie Locations. Kids of all ages can walk through the Victorian town where Jim Carey starred in the Majestic and Dustin Hoffman in Outbreak, the state park beach where Matthew Perry was a pirate; and the otherworldly canyons and groves where giant lizards and Jedi knights once strode.
