The Royal Family is changing up the Rutabaga Queen competition this year to integrate the Rutabaga Queen into the race better and include more participation from the citizens of the Kinetic Universe and innocent bystanders. This beloved annual tradition will feature the musical stylings of DJ Tim Brown and Grasshopper, the comic stylings of our EmCees Kristoffer Taylor and Stephanie Knowles, both Rutabaga Princess and, of course, the talented Rutabaga Queen contestants. This is an all-ages event.

The competition will be Saturday, May 27th, day one of the Kinetic Grand Championship, with contestants promoting themselves on the first day of the Championship and judged while on the course. The talent competition and crowning will happen after the closing of the finish line.

We will be doing a “fan favorite” award this year as well, so come ready to cast your votes for your favorite contestant. There will be a bar with our signature cocktails and beer, concessions provided by Six River Charter High School’s Sources of Strength, and exclusive Rutabaga Queen Merchandise!

In 1973, “friend of Hobart” and general oddball Barbara Ludwig decided that the Kinetic Race needed a reigning monarch, and so declared herself “Rutabaga Queen.” Since that fateful day, there have been dozens of raucous royals who have made it their duty to follow the cardinal rule of Rutabaga-ing: Have FUN! … aaaaaalmost to the point of obnoxiousness.

The Rutabaga Ball was invented by a Queen, and is organized by the Queens, who are independent performing artists and volunteers ... this particular Kinetic tradition pre-dates Kinetic Universe by many decades. Kinetic Universe is grateful for the chance to host the Rutabaga Ball, and support this tradition for as long as it pleases the Queens.

Anyone can compete for the Crown, one week before the Kinetic Grand Championship, at the Rutabaga Ball.
