Bald Hills Scenic Drive

Bald Hills Scenic Drive offers many opportunities for elk viewing in an area that features redwoods, magnificent oak woodlands and prairies.

Bald Hills Scenic Drive is located roughly 2.0 miles north of Orick, off Hwy 101, in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Due to steep grades and switchbacks, this road is not recommended for trailers or RVs.

0.3 miles - Orick Mill, the region's only remaining old growth lumber operation.
                Fifty years ago, there were 200 mills within a 100-mile radius.
2.7 miles - Lady Bird Johnson Grove an easy 1-mile loop meanders through a
                diverse ridgetop redwood forest.
7.1 miles - Tall Trees Access Road. Gate access - permit required (free) from park
                visitor centers in Orick or Crescent City. Six-mile road to Tall Trees Grove
                Trail, a steep climb down 1 1/2 miles.
17 miles - Lyons Ranch Historic Site. Two-mile easy walk to residence.
18 miles - Schoolhouse peak fire lookout. 1/2 mile walk up to the lookout. Elevation
                3,097 feet and a full circle panorama of the Bald Hills. Good turn around spot.
