This self-guided tour highlights just a few magnificent murals around Eureka. Renowned local artist Duane Flatmo has painted many of these, some humorous and some depicting historical views of the area. MURRAY FIELD VINTAGE 1930 4th between L & M Streets (Eureka Travel). By Duane Flatmo. This 50 foot mural is an early scene of old Murray Field, the local 1930s small craft airport with vintage airplanes being readied for takeoff. It incorporates the grass growing next to the building into the scene on the wall.
ANIMALS ARE PEOPLE TOO 905 4th Street (Courthouse Market) between J & K Sts. By Duane Flatmo and Rural Burl Mural Bureau students. 15-feet-tall-by-80-foot-wide, this mural depicts animal heads on human bodies. It’s a varied collection of creatures. Some are in suits, one has a top hat, and another brandishes a guitar.
THE GRAY VICTORIAN 723 3rd Street, between H and I (east wall of Times Printing). By Duane Flatmo and Rural Burl Mural Bureau students. This mural blends into the gray Victorian house behind the wall of the mural giving the illusion of a larger building. Includes footprints in the adjacent parking lot that designate the proper viewing point for the mural.

TRIBUTE TO ARCHITECTURE AND PERFORMING ARTS F Street Between 4th & 5th. By Duane Flatmo – completed in 2007.The mural measures 70 feet by 70 feet making it one of the largest in Northern California.
TULUWAT ISLAND - THE SUN SET TWICE ON THE PEOPLE 612 F Street between 6th and 7th (wall of Eureka Theater). By Alme Allen and Brian Tripp. The mural honors the Wiyot people, and contains many images that refer to the ceremonies and history of the indigenous people in Humboldt and Del Norte counties.

BUCKSPORT MURAL 3650 Broadway (Bucksport Sporting Goods). By Duane Flatmo, design by L.W. Duke. One mural depicts rugged mountain men in a precarious position aboard their canoe in raging river rapids. On the opposite side of the building are more mountain men around a campfire, keeping a wary eye on a bear.

HORSE AND HOUNDS 3956 Jacobs Ave. off Hwy 101 north of Eureka (Eureka Animal Clinic). By Duane Flatmo, 1994. A team of four Belgium draft horses that seems to move toward the viewer, while a small Jack Russell terrier looks on in awe of the gentle giants.
