Humboldt County has gorgeous scenery and the best way to see it is by getting out into nature. There are various ways you can do this and even the most non-adventuresome traveler can take advantage of what Humboldt County has to offer.  Humboldt County’s North Coast stands out with vibrant fishing villages and tall trees. The following is a list of the many soft adventure opportunities in the North Country.

Kayak in Humboldt Lagoons State Park. Big Lagoon and Stone Lagoon have calm, warm water and are the perfect places for a nice relaxing day on the water. 

Pacific Outfitters Adventures will take you on an adventure on the lagoons where you can see herds of Roosevelt Elk congregate in the marshy area around Maple Creek, and river otters play along the east shore. Porpoises, seals, sea lions, and whales can be seen from the beach.

Take a leisurely bike ride with beautiful views of the ocean The Hammond Trail was voted “best place to walk, jog, or bike” in Humboldt County in a poll taken by the local newspaper, the Times-Standard. This five-plus mile hiking/biking/equestrian component of the California Coastal Trail stretches from the Arcata Bottoms northward to Clam Beach County Park in Mckinleyville.

Fish the North Coast
Fish from a pier, the riverside, the ocean shore, a dock or a boat or chartered boat. There are so many places to fish on Humboldt County’s North Coast. Follow this link for a full listing of places to fish as well as fishing charters who promise a good catch.

Take a hike
Hiking is a great for getting up close and personal with Humboldt County’s beautiful parks and forests and is the best way to see the redwoods. Take a guided horseback riding tour through the redwoods with two great guide companies. Redwood Creek Buckarettes Horseback Rides offers one and a half, two and four hour guided horseback rides into Redwood National Park. Along the way you will see hundreds of species of native plants, trees of varying size and age, along with some wildlife here and there. All tours include guided, interpretive narration of local history, flora & fauna. They like to keep our tours small to create a better experience for the customers, but large groups are always welcome.
